No one ever says you should put the subject in the corner and keep the rest of the photo empty.
In fact traditional composition rules include the one third rule. Horizons in landscapes should be at the the division between the top and middle third of the frame, for instance. Subjects should be at one third too.
Once you know these rules, though, you can break them deliberately to achieve an effect, to make a point.
